While value-based reimbursement strategies and reimbursement models are not new to the healthcare marketplace, the advances in cell and gene therapies have created a new category of treatments with extremely high price tags (as much as $4 million per one-time treatment). As a result, these ultra-expensive treatments command additional efforts from payers to safeguard their appropriate use and ensure the expected value and positive outcomes, given the monumental and upfront investment that the payer must bear. VBCs have continued to evolve as a viable solution for payers, along with emerging players in the market with growing expertise in handling the complexities in VBC administration.
